Step by step guide to joys of walking

Step by step guide to joys of walking

IT wasn't really a New Year's Resolution, it has just sort of happened - but I am walking a lot more.

Walking everywhere I can in fact. And no - I haven't lost my licence or joined a weight loss program or gone troppo or antitechnology or anything like that.

I am not doing it to save money and I am definitely not doing my bit for climate change. I simply enjoy walking.

I enjoy the feeling of my legs moving and fresh air filling my lungs. It clears my head and it makes me feel good. There are probably lots of chemical explanations for why this is so and God (I mean Google) explains these things to me with beautiful Twentieth Century words like "dopamine, endorphins and serotonin."

I don't really care. I just know how I feel when I walk - and I feel good! I used to think that walking was boring. Why would you walk somewhere when you can drive?

It just takes up valuable time. Maybe that's the point?

We spend so much time going from point A to point B that it is all about the destination rather than the journey. I am definitely not one of those power-walkers you see moving through the streets like determined little bunnies with their hand-held weights and a look of mild discomfort on their faces.

I am a slow walker. I take my time. I notice things - old houses, flowers, birds, people watering their gardens, violent assaults (no just kidding).

Walking also makes good sense for one's health and fitness and is easily doable in a relatively flat city like Goulburn, which let's face it - only stretches about 7km from one end to the other.

I enjoy walking to work and back when I can and my pedometer (yes I actually bought one of those things) tells me that a one way trip is 2496 steps. Seems like a lot huh? Or does it?

Various health and weight loss programs recommend we walk about 10,000 steps a day (as well as doing a lot of other things). Some say this is better for us in the long term (on our joints, etc) than strenuous workouts at the gym!

And it is quite achievable - simply walking about 30 minutes a day will get you to 10,000 steps, on top of what we normally do.

Thirty minutes a day seems like a simple investment in good health to me - and I don't even have to join a gym.
