Forty four year old Angus Taylor has won the hotly contested Liberal pre-selection for the seat of Hume and will now stand for his party at the next federal election.
Mr Taylor, who is based in Goulburn and Sydney, has been a member of the Liberal Party for 18 years and beat out other candidates Ross Hampton, Rick Mandelson and Ed Storey.
The pre-selection ballot took place at the Goulburn Soldiers Club and involved 33 pre-selectors from around the Hume Electorate.
Mr Schultz, whose recent retirement triggered the need for pre-selection, was one of the pre-selectors and has effectively been able to pass the torch on to Mr Taylor who he had publicly backed going into the contest.
Mr Taylor's main competition for pre-selection was expected to be Yass based Ross Hampton who had the backing of Goulburn Mulwaree mayor Geoff Kettle and former ministers Reith, Campbell and Nelson.
In a Fairfax Poll that ran on the Goulburn Post, Young Witness, Yass Tribune, Cowra Guardian, Southern Highland News and Town and Country Magazine websites, readers favoured Mr Taylor with more than 67% of the 631 votes cast, with Hampton following on 18%.
Mr Schultz has held the seat since 1998. His retirement has opened the door for a three-cornered contest in which the National Party may take part. Nationals Senator Fiona Nash has been mentioned as a potential candidate.
Further details will be updated as they come to hand.
