City's sunny future

A RENEWABLE energy company is challenging Goulburn Mulwaree to become the country's leader in solar power.

Ingenero is also pitching its idea against a 64pc hike in electricity charges over the next three years.

The company's business development manager Patrick Greene outlined the plan at a council meeting on Tuesday night. Ingenero is one of the companies vying for a renewable energy scheme for Goulburn, following a recent expression of interest call.

Mr Greene was there at councillors' invitation, presenting more detailed information on the proposal.

The company aims to initially install 1000 solar systems in Goulburn homes over two years, but envision a much wider embrace in the medium to long term.

"We believe there is a significant opportunity for Goulburn to lead the country in renewable energy," he said.

"...What we are trying to do with this initiative is to make solar mainstream. We want people to feel comfortable with it and know that it's backed by council."

Creation of green energy jobs, several million dollars in economic activity and a sustainable industry were just some of the spin-offs.
