Exports 'at risk' over saleyard location

THE Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) has weighed into the debate about Kattle Gear Australia’s plan to construct a $9 million saleyard just 400 metres from the boundary of Southern Meats abattoir in Mazamet Rd.

AQIS has warned that some export markets could be lost as a result of countries’ reactions.

It follows abattoir general manager Neville Newton’s announcement in late August that he would pull his operation out of Goulburn if the saleyard were approved.

Quality assurance of export quality lamb would be jeopardised, he said. His company employs up to 350 people here.
