Howie's back from the brink

25 Nov, 2002 08:20 AM
Just three weeks after suffering an injury that could have easily ended his life, Andrew Howarth has made a miraculous recovery prompting a neurosurgeon to say she would never give up on a patient again after seeing Andrew fight his way back.

With the possibility of Andrew returning to Goulburn sometime this week, it just keeps getting better for the 'man in the blue Lancer'.

"I will hopefully be home next week or around December 11. I will have to wear a helmet around because one hit to my head wouldn't be good," Andrew told the Goulburn Post on Friday.

"When I come back I will have another operation on my head but from there it will be all good."

After having the trachea device removed from his throat last Thursday, Andrew has been able to speak to his family and according to his sister, Tanya he hasn't stopped since.

"It's just amazing how he has come along since the accident and it really shows his personality," Tanya said.

After the terrifying accident just 28 days ago he and his family have been inundated with calls and flowers from well wishers from Goulburn and other towns.

"The room is full of flowers and cards from everyone and there are also pictures of me around the walls and of my car as well," Andrew said.

Andrew is commonly known around Goulburn for his flamboyant car, which drowns out the noise of the busy main street with its engine.

"When I get home the first thing I want to do is take my car for a drive and have beer," he said.

"I won't be able to do that because I can't drive for six months and won't be able to drink alcohol for 12."

The only thing Andrew can't remember is what actually happened on the day of the accident.

"It is probably good that I can't remember all that stuff, but I know when I was put on the ambulance bed and placed in the restraints I actually snapped them," he said.

When Andrew woke from his coma he wasn't sure what to think after he was told of the injuries he had suffered.

"No one really knows what happened. It was just one of those freak accidents that was a one in a million chance."

Andrew's family and girlfriend have been by his side and have been delighted to see his rapid recovery.

Last Thursday night the Mulwaree year 12 formal was held, which Andrew was due to attend.

"I was pretty disappointed to miss out on that but I will make up for it when I can. One of the teachers from school rang to get a comment from me and I think she may have played it at the formal."

While in the intensive care unit, Andrew put on around 20 kilograms in weight and he is mystified as to how it happened.

"I thought I would have lost weight because I wasn't eating, so I don't know what happened. I have lost most of it now and they are giving me protein drinks."

When taken to Goulburn Hospital he received a lifesaving operation from doctor Oliva Florica, which saved his life.

Andrew extended a warm thank-you to Dr Florica and the staff at both Goulburn Base and St George Hospitals.
