THE Lieder Theatre Company's final production for the year - Footrot Flats - opens tonight.

Footrot Flats was the popular comic strip created by New Zealand cartoonist Murray Ball.

The comic strip ran from 1975 until 1994 in newspapers around the world, though the unpublished strips continued to be released in book form until 2000.

Roger Hall wrote Footrot Flats the stage musical version with music by Philip Norman and lyrics by AK Grant based on the characters created by Murray Ball.

The play is full of the favourite characters from the strip including Wal played by Martin Sanders, Aunt Dolly played by Muffy Hedges, Dog played by Josh Waters and Cheeky played by Melissa Chandler.
