Logging debate 'closed'

07 Apr, 2008 08:18 AM
UPPER Lachlan Shire Council will not re-open discussion on its ban on logging in the Mt Rae forest despite strong criticism from The Southern Tablelands Farm Forestry Network and "Fire Baron" Bernie Smillie.

Mr Smillie, in a letter discussed at the March 27 Shire Council meeting at Taralga, stated his intention to lodge a complaint with the Local Government Minister.

He pointed out that the new Department of Environment and Climate Change had issued him a Vegetation Plan which allowed for the felling of trees under strict guidelines.

Both Mr Smillie claimed he and the Forestry Network had not been treated with "procedural fairness" in his application to log his section of the forest for firewood.
