The SES has issued a warning for residents to check the legitimacy of callers asking for flood relief donations, following reports that the Goulburn region is being targeted in the latest scam attack.
Callers posing as members of the SES are calling households claiming to be seeking financial assistance with the Northern NSW Flood crisis.
The SES is not collecting any funds for flood relief.
“We’ve had very similar incidents to this happen in Goulburn previously and quite a number of them at that,” Deputy Region Controller Kevin Anderson says.
“There has currently only been one incident that has been reported to me lately, but again, that’s only one person who’s taken the initiative to ring and check if it’s real.”
The numbers of people, who potentially have fallen victim to this scam or previous ones, are alarming Mr Anderson said.
He warns that callers are currently targeting remote locations around Goulburn with the potential to move inland.
“You can’t predict what these people are going to do or where they’re going to do it,” he said.
“The only thing you can do is keep one step ahead of them at all times.
The SES says, if anyone wants to donate to the NSW Flood Relief programs they should contact a charity themselves.
Anyone that has received a phone call or has any information regarding this is urged to contact the local police.
Residents should always check the status and legitimacy of any calls requesting financial support.
