That’s the principle behind the Goulburn Motorcycle Club’s bid to host a stadium cross meet at Seiffert Oval next April.
Council gave the club’s proposal the allclear at a meeting on November 20. Now the wheels are motion.
The spectacle, set to feature dirt-mound jumps and sharp turns on the playing surface of Seiffert Oval, will coincide with Goulburn’s 150th birthday.
Any concerns the local cricket fraternity has over potential ground damage are quelled by the fact the event will occur in April – two weeks after season’s end.
The cycling track surrounding the playing surface will be covered for the occasion.
The Motorcycle Club’s idea first arose during a Sports Council meeting earlier this year. Sporting bodies were encouraged to contribute to the city’s 150th. The Club was eager to play its part.
“It’ll be a good spectacle,” Motorcycle Club president Richard Toparis said.
“It’s only a small surface but we’ll still get jumps and turns… There’ll be plenty of thrills and spills.”
The event is expected to attract between 100 and 200 riders, most of who will travel from outside Goulburn.
Although the Motorcycle Club, which last year celebrated its centenary, has no regular track at its disposal and limited practice when it comes to hosting events, Toparis is confident stadium cross will go off without a hitch.
“In the last two years we’ve had two rounds of the Amcross Series, and that’s a statewide event,” he said.
“This should be a bit easier for us.”
Toparis said the club was confident it could lure big name riders to accompany promising juniors and past-their-prime seniors.
Former Australian Supersport champion Troy Herfoss is expected to be among those lining up.
Those with queries about the April 6 event, or the club’s proposal to establish a track at Mt Gray, are invited to attend a meeting at the Black Sheep Irish Pub tomorrow night from 7pm.
