POLICE believe a bushfire which has burnt out 78 hectares of Booti Booti National Park, near Forster, was deliberately lit.

Specialist crime scene officers and RFS investigators will examine the area today to pinpoint the cause of the fire.

Police from Manning Great Lakes are appealing for public assistance as inquiries continue.

About 1pm on Friday emergency services responded to a bushfire on the eastern side of Lakes Way. The fire jumped the road and continued to burn into further bushland causing a large amount of smoke on the roadway.

A number of roads were closed including Green Point Drive, which isolated the township of Green Point.

NSW Rural Fire Service managed to control the fire about 8.30pm, and a short time later police escorted locals back to Green Point.

All roads have now been reopened.
