One of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art prizes, the Archibald prize, will again come to Goulburn in July on the regional tour.
Director of the GRAG Jane Cush told the Post this year was especially exciting as Goulburn is the first cab off the rank on the exhibition tour.
“We are the first NSW venue to have the Archibald’s after the gallery of NSW, everyone should come and see it!” Australia’s indigenous heritage will feature in May with the opening of Marrambang Meeting. The exhibition sees local artist Perc Carter team up with Peter Swain and Adam Hill to present a display of sculpture and 2D works, to showcase the spirit of Goulburn as a meeting place for surrounding indigenous people, historically.
“In May, we also have a big performance exhibition with an internationally famous Indonesian artist by the name of Dadang Christanto,” Ms Jane Cush, said.
The exhibition, called Survivor, will be a major performance by the Brisbane based Christanto, contemplating loss, history, politics and shared humanity.
The exhibition requires a degree of community involvement for the full effect, Ms Cush said.
“We are looking for volunteers to have mud covered on them! “We will video it and have photographs printed which will be for the exhibition.
The whole gallery will be a mudbath.”
During the 150th celebrations, the GRAG will play host to two notable exhibitions showcasing Goulburn’s sporting history and architectural significance.
“Our focus on the birthday celebrations will be on Goulburn heritage, with an exhibition called Main St Manfred, a showcase of buildings designed by him,” Ms Cush said.
“We also have a huge sporting history exhibition and are hoping to showcase Goulburn’s incredible sporting history.
“It will display our state and national champions with the odd animal thrown in too!” Large portraits of each athlete will be on display, provided by arthead. After the exhibition they will be moved to display in the new multiuse centre.
“Also in March we are commissioning artist Emrah Baki Ulas to do light projections on the cathedrals with master students at UTS.”
Not only does 2013 mark the celebration of Goulburn’s 150th, but the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery celebrates 30 years in the business.
“We are celebrating our 30th birthday this year with an exhibition of 30 significant artists in the GRAG’s history,” she said.
The birthday exhibition will run from August 30 til September 28, with more details closer to the date.
