Victoria Park: the Hub

THE hub of activity this Australia Day will be Victoria Park, with the program boasting a variety of entertainment, activities and awards sure to appeal to just about everyone.

The fun kicks off bright and early with a free BBQ breakfast in Victoria Park from 7:30am.

Live music from Steve Ruddell and Corby-Lee Hunt at 10am will keep the crowds entertained before the official ceremony begins at 10:45 with a sky-diver landing in the park carrying the Australian Flag.

Following the acknowledgement of country and welcome by Mayor Geoff Kettle, the manager of Woolworths Goulburn Danny Jackson will speak before handing over the mic to Goulburn’s Australia Day Ambassador Jacinta Tynan.

Jacinta is the presenter of the daily and evening bulletins on Sky News and is also an accomplished author of two books, a columnist and the mother of two beautiful boys.

Her writing on the worries of motherhood has resulted in some healthy debate in recent times- including a story reminding us all to celebrate the gift of motherhood, which she says ‘every mother in Australia seems to have an opinion on’.

Her first book ‘Good Man Hunting’ , about the hardships of looking for love, published in 2005, earned her the accolade of ‘Australia’s answer to Carrie Bradshaw’, and her second book, published in 2007, entitled ‘Some Girls Do: My Life as A Teenager’ is an anthology of female writers sharing true stories of their adolescence.

She is also the patron of SISTER2Sistera mentor program for disadvantaged teenage girls.

Jacinta is a regular on Channel 7’s Sunrise and Weekend Sunrise and also writes a regular column for Sunday Life magazine, along with blogging for dailylife.com.au.

She is an accomplished reporter and newsreader for Sky News, and previously worked at the ABC for seven years as a presenter for ABC Asia Pacific and the late edition news. She was also a fill-in presenter for the 7pm bulletins, 7:30 Report and the World at Noon. She has reported for the Seven Network, and also as a weather presenter and Thredbo snow reporter for the WIN Network.

Invited as a guest of honour, Jacinta will deliver the keynote address, capturing the true spirit of being Australian.

An impressive nomination list for citizen of the year, young citizen of the year and event of the year will make for tight competition when the winners are announced during the proceedings. (See full list p.7) Seven new Australian Citizens will participate in the citizenship ceremony before the official presentation concludes with the Australian Anthem, performed by Ellie Beckman.

Rounding off the scheduled events will be the prize draw at 1pm, a performance by Desiree’s Dance Academy and the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium.

There will be free entry into the Goulburn Aquatic Centre on the day, as well as a jumping castle, giant slide, an animal farm, vintage car displays, billy cart derby, canoeing, parachute games, market stalls, food stalls and more to keep the celebrations rolling into the afternoon.
