Parks Administration manager Jason Moroney said Council will be holding a clean-up around the Blackshaw Rd and Eastgrove areas.
“We’re asking people to meet at the entrance to Goulburn Golf Club and then move along Blackshaw Rd, into Park Rd and Sterne St depending on how many volunteers we can get,” he said.
“We also ask that volunteers wear safe work clothes, sturdy shoes, a hat and some gloves.”
He also said that litter around the river areas had been fairly bad in recent years.
“From time to time, there can be a lot of rubbish and litter left along our rivers,” he said.
“After the floods, there’s usually a lot, although I definitely think its improving, and looking at today in particular, there’s a lot less rubbish been left around than past years.
“Also, with Goulburn’s 150th birthday celebrations, it’s a good time to clean up one of our higher profile areas, especially around the walking tracks and golf course here on Blackshaw Road.”
The 2012 ‘Rubbish Report’ brought out by the Clean-Up Australia Day organisation highlighted some alarming facts about the state of public spaces in NSW.
“It comes as a surprise to find over half the rubbish reported by NSW volunteers came from roadways, beaches and waterways,” it said.
“The greatest proportion of rubbish removed was spread across plastics, glass and metal. Concerning is the increase of all three with plastics increasing from 26 per cent in 2011 to 38pc in 2012; while glass and metal increased to 16 pc each in 2012 from 12pc in 2011.
Over the last 23 years volunteers have donated more than 25 million hours, removing an estimated 272,500 tonnes of rubbish from more than 137,500 sites across the country. But with every Australian still producing approximately two tonnes of garbage per year, there is still a long way to go.”
Schools and businesses are involved in the event, with Business Clean-Up Day yesterday and Schools Clean-Up Day on this Friday.
