Goulburn’s 150th Birthday Committee member Councillor Carol James has unveiled a jampacked calendar of events to commemorate the city’s historical milestone.
She wants to hear from community members keen on hosting a birthday-related activity during March.
“Our celebration schedule for March is starting to fill up nicely but there are still plenty of slots available for any group who would like to conduct a community activity to celebrate the City’s 150th,” Cr James said.
“We’re especially reaching out to those community groups from the outer areas of the local government area, the villages.
“If you have an activity, a special 150th Birthday event, let me or the committee know, and we’ll put it in our official Birthday calendar of events.”
Key events already booked for next March include the Ecumenical Church Service and official birthday cake cutting at St Saviour’s Cathedral on the 14th, Goulburn’s Birthday.
That afternoon and evening, the City will host a variety of family-orientated events, including a massive fireworks display.
On March 7, the Garden Club is scheduled to unveil a sundial in Victoria Park rose garden, while the local branch of the Country Women’s Association will conduct a 150th Birthday Cake Competition on the 13th.
Goulburn And District Race Club has organised a special race day, and half day holiday, for the 15th.
The weekend of the 16th and 17th will feature a huge street parade (under the theme of ‘Goulburn On The Move’), a flower show, a country music event and ‘Windellama Gold’.
Celebrations will culminate on the 30th, which also happens to be Easter Saturday, with a youth concert ‘Goulburn Goes GaGa’ in Victoria Park.
“We want to produce a feeling in all our residents, young and old, of pride and joy about our City,” Cr James said.
“And that’s already starting to happen with the many community groups coming on board, and the business owners in the CBD who have taken advantage of heritage grants to give their buildings a nice facelift in the lead up to next year.
“Just look at the Post Office, it’s looking wonderful isn’t it.”
Cr James said she hopes to have all of the city’s museums open during the weekends of next March.
“A host of exhibitions are also being planned to commemorate the 150th, including a sporting exhibition at the gallery, a woodworkers exhibition and an event by the Soroptomists to celebrate the women of Goulburn.”
