He rubbed shoulders with Olympic hero Geoff ‘Skippy’ Huegill, too. The encounter with a Commonwealth Games gold medallist had a positive effect on Jake’s performance.
He finished second in his heat of the 100m breaststroke and 17th overall, clocking a personal best time of 1:22.47. That swim also set a new Goulburn Amateur Swimming Club short course 12-years record – one that’s stood untouched for 11 years.
Jake smashed out another personal best time in the 50 free.
His time of 28.70 seconds surpassed the record he set just four weeks earlier. Jake has no fewer than five Goulburn Amateur Swimming Club records to his credit this short course season.
Two of those records have taken more than a decade to better.
A meet for the ACT swim squad, in early September, is the next event on the cards.
The 12-year-old, meantime, continues to prepare for the demanding summer season.
His performance at Homebush follows the success of six fellow club members in Woden.
Lachlan Gilbert, Ava Gilbert, Georgia Murrell, Jack McCarthy, Lachlan Norberg and Hannah Phelps earned between them 22 places in a combined 30 races at the ACT Winter Development Series.
Each of the six set new personal best times along the way.
