The decision was determined in consultation with race organisers, Macarthur Collegians Cycling Club and Cycling NSW following a thorough final review of safety procedures at a scheduled meeting yesterday afternoon. The meeting also took into account the indications of withdrawal by several of the leading NRS teams due to safety concerns.
The critical element for this event is the initial 75km section that travels up the Hume Freeway north from Goulburn. Cycling Australia CEO, Graham Fredericks said the local police authorities have been very supportive.
“The police have worked closely with the organisers and Cycling NSW and were confident they could ensure a safe passage up the highway for the riders. However, there are still inherent risks with a single lane rolling road closure, which are even more pronounced on one of Australia’s busiest highways.” before adding. “In the end, despite every effort from the organisers, the race could not comply with CA's safety standards.”
Fredericks was quick to recognise the impact of the cancellation. “Unfortunately, it is late notice. But to be honest, this is one of our heritage events and the oldest race on the calendar, so we were determined to explore every possible option to allow it to proceed.” he said.
“I want to acknowledge the Macarthur Collegians club, major sponsor Paradice Investment Management and Cycling NSW, who have all worked extremely hard to support this race. I thank them for their understanding and share in their disappointment.”
Fredericks concluded by saying. "The Southern Highlands provides some challenging road racing opportunities right on Sydney’s doorstep. We will continue to work with these groups to try and maintain the history and spirit of ‘The Goulburn’ into the future.”
The Wilson Asset Management charity ride will still be proceeding this year. This event has been conducted along with 'The Goulburn' under the facilitation of Simon Poidevin, raising over one million dollars for charity since 2005.
