Maple (John) Thrower from Taralga was a corporal in the AIF’s 2/19th Battalion (8th Division) when this photo was taken, most likely in late 1941 or early 1942. He was stationed in Singapore before the Japanese invasion in February, 1942 and taking some time out for recreation. “Whoopee! How’s this? In a Chinese millionaire’s garden and just had the photo taken when I heard a hostile voice from the rear. Of course, we left then,” he wrote on the back of the photo. He was captured in February, 1942 and spent the next three and a half years as a prisoner of war. – Supplied by daughter, Louise Thrower.
