I pen this week’s column from Goulburn Base Hospital, seated at the end of my son’s bed in the children’s ward, watching the nurses whizz about the place with a touch of military precision to everything they do. What a job these men and women knowingly choose to take on.

Nursing is a job that many of us could never imagine doing.
I’ve watched ambulance after ambulance arrive today, and not one of the nurses or doctors has stopped to have a break in the hours I’ve been watching them, tireless.
It’s moments like this that I am reminded of why we chose to live in Goulburn.
While we knew Goulburn had services that far exceeded any that we were able to access in our previous location, what we didn’t realise was that a tremendous level of community spirit exists amongst people those who live here.
That spirit is evident in the community support provided to local schools and services.
I’ve never seen a calendar so full of fundraising events.
This community rallies behind those who need it, and I don’t need to tell you how great that is.
I’ve had offers of help today from people I least expected it from, without even asking for it and they were serious. Damn you Goulburnians are a nice bunch.
Our children’s health and education has improved in leaps and bounds since the move, and yes even though I write this from my sons hospital bedside. It is important to note that I am still here in town.
Instead of being shipped to a hospital miles away from my family, as was often the case for us.
Rural health care still has a long way to go before it is remotely adequate, but that’s another column for another day.
Today I’d like to take a leaf from my cohort Mr Cole, and express my admiration for this town of ours and say thanks Goulburn for being the community that you are and for welcoming us into it so well.
