Shortly after 2 pm emergency services arrived at the location and started treating the male who was being cooled under running water.
Five NSWRFS crews battled to contain the blaze while Ambulance personnel and the NSW Ambulance helicopter was dispatched to treat the man for serious burns.
Doctors and local paramedics worked at stabilising the patient. After being treated on scene for over 2 hours he was flown by helicopter to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.
An estimated 6 hectares of surrounding land was burnt in the fire.
Police and Workcover will be investigating the incident to determine how the explosion occurred.
The fire was contained by shortly after 4pm.
The facility is believed to be operated by Foti Fireworks, the company that supplies the firework shows for Sydney's NYE celebrations.
