The first grade side held Cooma to 14 points while amassing 51 against the visitors.
“Cooma are always a tough side and the point difference did not feel that large when we came off the field,” Newby said.
“We seemed to spend quite a bit of time in our own half but apparently our defence was strong enough to hold them out.
“We had a home ground advantage as the travel distance also affects the makeup of the Cooma teams.
“Cooma can be quite a different side at home, but so can we for the same reasons “I was really pleased with the way our team played from the kickoff.
“They played well as a team with good communication and the forwards setting the platform."
Try scorers for the Goulburn Dirty Red Firsts were Jordan Wilcox with three, Mick Webber with one, Ben Todkill one and Rob Sheekey two. Dominic Falk kicked five goals and two penalty goals.
Wilcox was also named Player’s player for the game.
The Dirty Reds have a good mix of new and longer term players this year and they have been training hard from the pre season.
So far they have been undefeated in the top two grades. The reserve grade have not had a try scored against them so far and last weekend they held Cooma out conceding only a single penalty goal for a 17 to three point win.
Reserves try scorers for the Reds were Ben Pearson, Mathew Bird and Jayden Hunt while Brendan Courts kicked one goal. In the junior grades the under 18s went down to Marist College 27 to eight, Under 15s defeated their Uni North opponents 34 to 10 and the Under 13 Reds held Daramalan College scoreless for a 57 point win.
This Saturday all grades are at home on Poidevin Oval. Games will start at 10.30am with the Under 13s playing Uni North, 11.30 the Under 15s take on Broulee and at 12.30 the Under 18s clash with St Edmunds College.
Reserves and First Grade Dirty Reds are both up against Yass. The first grade game starts at 3pm.
