Turner – semi-famous in league circles for last year beating outed Raider Blake Ferguson in a boxing bout – crossed late on Saturday to cap a come-from-behind win over rivals Belconnen United Scholars in Canberra.
The 28-26 result marks the Bulldogs’ first win of the Canberra Raiders Cup season. Captain-coach Michael Picker was relieved to score a win - especially given his charges threw away an 18 point lead against the Queanbeyan Blues in round one.
Former Canberra Raider Picker admits there’s work to do.
“We need to be more fluid. We’ll play five minutes good, then 10 minutes bad,” he said.
“We’d get the ball from kick-off and basically hand it straight back.”
The skipper praised younger brother Ben for his tireless work down the middle and his teammates for getting themselves back into a winning position.
“I still think our attack is good, it’s everything else we need to concentrate on,” he said.
A repeat performance against the Gungahlin Bulls tomorrow won’t suffice. The Bulls have opened their season with consecutive wins and are confident of making it three-from-three at Workers Arena.
Meantime, Bulldogs reserve grade will be eyeing consecutive wins when they take the field 2.20pm tomorrow.
Goulburn managed a 20-18 win over the Scholars last Saturday.
Unlike their counterparts, the 18s went down 28-14. Tomorrow’s matches coincide with the Bulldogs annual Ladies’ Day.
Fittingly the Goulburn Stockmen under 17s girls side kicks-off proceedings with a match against Gungahlin.
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 28 [M Bani, J Vatikani, J Gray, L Turner, B Picker tries; B Picker 4 conversions] defeated Belconnen United Scholars 26.
