DO you hear that? There’s a sound coming from Goldsmith St… A sound not heard for many years in the Lilac City – the sound of a chorus.

Since the disbandment of the Goulburn Musical Society and Argyle Musical Society years ago there have been limited opportunities for those interested in musical theatre, until now.
The Lieder Theatre’s musical revue ‘Do You Hear The Lieder Sing?’ will premiere tonight.
For those unfamiliar with the lingo (as I was myself) a revue is a collection of songs pulled from a huge variety of musicals old and new.
There’s no plot, no story and no strenuous thinking required; it’s designed for enjoyment and enjoyment alone.
Coordinators Marianne Powles and Cara Jeffery hope the show will introduce the City to the wonder of musicals and inspire interest in future projects.
“There’s a lot of people at the Lieder who wanted to do a musical but this show has also brought in people who have never done anything with the Lieder before that have been involved with musicals in other places,” Ms Powles said on Wednesday.
Throughout the three-month rehearsal process, an all-sort cast has been pulled together. A doctor, architect, local councillor, stay-at-home mums, pet shop workers and school kids feature among the 31-strong cast.
They will perform some 36 musical pieces from favourites such as Gilbert and Sullivan, Wicked, Les Miserables, Oliver and more throughout the night, accompanied by a small ensemble.
“Something that’s very special about musicals when looking at Community Theatre is there are very few roles in plays for people who just want to be part of the group,” Ms Powles said.
“There’s a lot of people who want to be on stage and want to be in something and they want the lights but they don’t necessarily want to be the star and a musical is a wonderful thing because you can get in that chorus and experience the collectiveness of being a part of a show and not having divas and everyone putting their ego in their pockets.”
Not to be confused with a concert, the Revue will feature all the theatrics of a musical on stage, in condensed form.
The songs chosen all have a stand-alone power and Ms Jeffery believes the show will flow seamlessly.
“The difficulty with this sort of thing is trying to get people into the moment that’s created by the musical without all the stuff that leads up to that moment,” she explained.
“So it’s strung together with bits of dialogue just enough to introduce the next number coming up… “A lot of these musicals don’t make it to regional Australia and so unless you’re into musical theatre in its own right you probably miss a lot of them so hopefully this introduces Goulburn to a few different musicals.”
The Revue will open for a special three show season this weekend with shows on tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
