The day will see the Canberra based Centurions take on the Newcastle Cobras in the first senior gridiron match ever to be played in Goulburn.
The Centurion’s sister club, the Diamonds, will also be playing their maiden game against the Bondi Raiders.
Centurions president Peter Lilley said it was a chance for Goulburn to see a sport they might not be familiar with.
“It’ll be a different experience for them to watch another form of football most people would have only seen on TV,” he said.
“There is this perception that it can be kind of boring, but I can guarantee that watching it live is just as exciting as any other type of football.”
Junior Gridiron has previously been played at the Workers Arena in 2012 when the Centurions played the University of Canberra Firebirds in an exhibition game. “It’s the perfect venue.
Goulburn is the good halfway spot for all involved and I remember the Arena being a great place to watch football,” Lilley said.
Entry to the Gridiron day will be free, however it is hoped attendees will make a donation to the Make A Wish foundation upon entry.
There will also be a raffle for an Australian Outback national Gridiron team helmet and a game ball.
“We’ve got this American import named Lars. He’s 6’5 and 130kgs and played college football at Fresno State in the United States. He’ll be great to watch,” Lilley said.
“Plus this will be the very first time our Diamonds would have played a match. I saw them play a practise match last Monday, and people can expect an exciting game.”
The Centurions vs Newcastle Cobras kicks off at 3.00pm at the Workers Arena on Saturday.
The Diamonds vs Bondi Raiders women’s game kicks off before hand at 12.30pm.
