He told the Post he wanted to concentrate on his mayoral duties and did not want a conflict of interest. It also means he will not be Ms Goward’s campaign manager for the 2015 election.
Ms Goward referred questions about the branch to the Liberal Party executive and declined to respond to claims her support was falling. She has responded to Mr Plews’ letter in today’s Post.
Mr Turner said as a farmer he was not in regular contact with people to gauge Ms Goward’s chances at the 2015 poll.
“(But) I don’t see significant numbers in the electorate saying ‘well, that’s enough of that,’” he said.
He told the Post there was no doubt some Liberal Party MPs had been “found wanting” by ICAC. By stepping down, several had shown respect for the people and the party.
“It’s a hard lesson but where things have gone off the rails, the party has to get on and deal with them fairly and transparently.”
