And it’s with the best of intentions The Goulburn and District Suicide Prevention Network (GDSPN) will host this weekend’s Walk For Hope in Victoria Park.

The event will raise awareness about suicide prevention and bereavement services in the area and will act as the City’s official commemoration for World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK Day.

It’s a cause close to many hearts, vice-chairman of the GDSPN Jeff Wilson told the Post.

“Yes, the Walk For Hope is about building awareness, resources and information but it’s also about getting the community together to network,” Mr Wilson said.

“I think networking is one of the best forms of advertising and of learning about what’s available and what the best thing to do in certain situations is.

“It’s not necessarily about learning from professionals in the field, it’s about learning from other people who have been impacted by suicide.”

The event will also act as an unveiling ceremony for what will become a sacred feature of the cityscape, a landscaped bereavement reflection garden.

The garden, set to overlook the Victoria Park Rose Garden, will house the Joe Medway Memorial Bench - an item dedicated to the treasured mental health advocate.

The bench itself has been handcrafted by the local Men’s Shed and the garden funded in part by Kenmore Hospital Museum.

“On the day of the walk we will be unveiling the bench seat and showing everybody the area that is going to be landscaped for the bereavement reflection area,” Mr Wilson explained.

“We are going to do landscaping in that area and have already heard from people who have been impacted by suicide that are interested in planting some trees in remembrance of their loved one who passed away.”

Registration (at just a gold coin donation) will begin at 9:30am on Saturday, with the first 100 entrants receiving a free R U OK shirt.

The Walk For Hope will commence at about 10am.

After that, until 12pm, there will be a range of family friendly activities including DIY stress balls, a large-scale art project and music by Kim and Ellee Beckman.

The PHAMS music group will perform a special Walk For Hope song at 11am followed by speeches from Mayor Geoff Kettle, Member for Hume Angus Taylor and Goulburn MP Pru Goward.

Joanne Cunningham will also speak.

The Joe Medway memorial bench and Bereavement Reflection Garden will be unveiled at 11:45am.

At 12, a fundraising barbecue lunch will be hosted by the GDSPN.

The organisers hope those attending the walk will either wear yellow (for R U OK Day) or purple, the official colour of the Prevention Network.

The Walk For Hope 2014 has been organised by Anglicare, Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Medicare Local and the Suicide Prevention Network.
