So says Mayor Geoff Kettle in his pitch for re-election to the top job.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” he told the Post.
Councillors will nominate their leaders for the coming year at tomorrow night’s meeting.
But there appear to be few surprises with the existing team - Cr Kettle and deputy, Bob Kirk - being the only confirmed starters.
Council general manager Warwick Bennett told the Post he’d only received one nomination each for mayor and deputy mayor.
Nevertheless, several councillors have warned against complacency in the leadership team.
Cr Sam Rowland said he would give them a respectable pass for the past year’s performance.
“I think there is too much back patting going on between the two; moving motions in Council congratulating and applauding their own work being one example,” he said.
“We are not there to give each other praise and their actions indicate to me that they have perhaps become complacent. If they are re-elected on Tuesday night, then I hope they have the best interests of the people in mind, not their own.”
Cr Rowland was referring to Cr Kirk’s notice of motion last month acknowledging the mayor for his work on several initiatives, including a Southern Meats export deal.
Cr Robin Saville won’t be nominating either. He said Crs Kettle and Kirk had the numbers and “thus the confidence of the majority of Council.”
“Cr Kettle did gain a thumping win in the 2012 local election and that must continue to be respected. Cr Kirk continues to be a loyal deputy,” he said.
“The two work well togetheras one would expect since they were elected as a team, although at times I think the good and frequent communication between the two should be extended to the whole council.”
But he’s keeping an open mind.
If anyone else nominated for mayor, he would give them “serious thought.”
“It must be remembered that no one of us is indispensable and no one of us has exclusive rights to leadership,” Cr Saville said.
“…I will continue to be an independent voice that challenges the council and makes them think of issues from different angles.”
Cr Kettle said he and Cr Kirk believed the council was running “quite well.”
“The reason I’m nominating again is that with the new general manager we’re undergoing significant structural change, which I support 100 per cent,” he said.
“There’s also local government reform so I think it’s more important than ever that stability and cohesion remain to see us through not only the restructure but what’s around the corner in the near future.”
The duo is keen to advance the archives opportunity for Goulburn and several other development opportunities. Cr Kettle argued stability was also needed to achieve these.
Cr Saville, meantime, believed Council had performed well in the past year.
“I would give it an A minus grade for its efforts to promote the city outside our boundaries, identifying, attracting and facilitating new industry and thus employment and taking action on issues like the upgrade of Auburn Street and Rocky Hill forecourt and investment in the villages,” he said.
“The upgrade of the library is a project of which I am particularly proud. It is so good to see the library full of people of all ages and with now so much more space and new comfortable furniture.”
The new GM, Warwick Bennett, had been “a welcome catalyst for reform and regeneration.” His communication with staff and councillors was also “exemplary.”
But there was room for improvement.
Cr Saville said he was frustrated with the delay in making a decision on St Clair (Historical Museum).
“I would also like to see our parks with equipment in them and a decision made on the treasure chest of money from the sale of city assets,” he said.
“The constant rates rises, waste charges and water price rises are on my mind and the impact on residents needs to be minimised.
“Waste needs to be cut within the organisation and I support the direction and energy of our new general manager in this regard and with his focus on customer service.”
