The ‘Selfies For Sustainability’ competition is the first event to be announced off the program for the Goulburn Connects Festival, which will head into its second year in late October.
Although the photographic medium has long been associated with a degree of vanity, 17-year-old Agata Nabaglo is hoping the selfie-competition will encourage something much deeper.
“Basically it’s a competition that encourages young people to take a selfie and stand for sustainability, to send a message that they care about sustainability and their environment.
It’s going to be a huge thing hopefully,” Agata said on Monday.
The guidelines are simple: take a selfie, upload it to the dedicated competition website (to be confirmed), enter your details and that’s it. Easy as that.
Agata says while it is preferable the pictures have a sustainable theme it is not completely necessary.
“Sure, the best selfies and the ones that will probably win will have a sustainability theme but if a person wants to just take a picture of themselves and say “I stand for sustainability” that’s also okay.
“It’s going to be very easy to enter, we are going to have a website set up and they are just going to have to fill out a form about themselves, upload the selfie and it’s done.”
The competition has its incentives. A $500 cheque will be awarded to the winner, a $200 prepaid Visa card given to the runner up and a $100 prepaid visa card awarded to third place. A prize presentation will be held on November 1.
The Connects festival will be three times bigger and better than last year, organisers say. More detail on the entire program will be released in the coming weeks.
“The Connects Festival is a great chance for everyone to get educated. It’s all there for a person, they just have to get involved,” Agata said.
Details on how to enter are to be finalised.
