A police dog squad van crashed into a house in Smithfield on Tuesday morning.

Police were responding to a report of a person at the home in Fairfield Heights when the vehicle lost control and left the road, hitting a house on the corner of Smithfield Road and Poulding Street about 5:30am.

The vehicle crashed through the front fence and travelled across the front yard before clipping the side of the house.
A 68-year-old man and 55-year-old woman were in their bedroom at the time of the crash.
They sustained minor injuries and were treated by paramedics. They did not require hospital treatment
The police officer and his dog were not hurt.
Inquiries are continuing into how the crash occurred, police said.
