This year 212 artworks have been submitted from some 60 artists from all over NSW.
“With more than 200 artworks in this year’s prize, it’s the best number of entries we’ve had for a couple of years,” Goulburn and District Art Society president Helen De Jonge said.
“We’ve got artists entering from the Central Coast, South Coast, rural and regional NSW, Sydney, the A.C.T, Southern Highlands and of course our all important local artists.”
The official opening and announcement of the winner will be held tomorrow night from 6:30pm in the Workers Club Auditorium.
Mayor Geoff Kettle will officially open proceedings, with guest judge Dennis Mortimer from the Art Shed in Queanbeyan judging the best artwork.
Mr Mortimer is well known in the Queanbeyan and Canberra areas as an accomplished artist.
The major prize (acquisitive, meaning the Workers Club has ownership of the winning work, applying across all sections) is $1000, with prize money for each section (non acquisitive) of $500.
“This means that the prize winner will receive $1500 overall for their winning artwork,” Ms De Jonge said.
There will also be a raffle held with the prize of an artwork painted by local artist Marion Schumacher, with all raffle money going to the Maternity Ward of Goulburn Base Hospital.
“This prize is a great opportunity for people of all walks of life to see and also purchase some great quality art,” Mrs De Jonge said.
“With all art for sale, people can keep it as a momento or as a present for a family member or good friend.”
The Art Prize exhibition will be running all weekend, opening on Friday and Saturday from 10am- 5pm, and Sunday from 10am- 4pm.
Entry for the opening night tomorrow is $5, as there will be finger food and drinks available, however entry to the exhibition is free.
The Goulburn and District Art Society are also hosting beginners art workshops once a month at Gallery On Track. Local artists teach all styles of art from pastels to watercolours and everything in between.
“We normally have about 10 students attending these classes, and we are always looking for more,” Mrs De Jonge said.
“Who knows, their artwork could be a finalist in next year’s Art Prize!” For more information about the art prize or the beginners workshops, contact Helen De Jonge on 4829 2300 or her mobile on 0412 185 019.
