AFTER over 20 years of trying Goulburn Cycle Club won its first ever Interclub Series at the weekend. In the final race of the season hosted by the Southern highlands Club at Bundanoon the Goulburn gained sufficient points to take out the title from Illawarra, Macarthur, Southern Highlands and Nowra.

‘I remember turning up to Interclubs with only a handful of Goulburn riders’ said Club stalwart, Graeme Northey.
‘We’ve had our share of individual winners such as Neville Smith and Jarrod Coveney but never really challenged for the trophy’ said Mr Northey.
‘About two years ago and after some good individual performances the Club hatched a plan to win the series’ said Club President Adam Lambert.
‘With regular racing against some of the best in the State, organised training rides and a commitment to local racing the overall standard of all riders in the Club has improved tenfold’ added the President.
‘We came close last year to winning the series and I think that gave us the spur we needed to go one better this year’
‘While our Division 1 riders or Troy Herfoss, Andy Cartwright, Adam Kiss and Ricky Brooker have been outstanding the improvement this year came from our Division 2 riders. Grant Moller, Craig Johnson, Brian Rawlinson, Jason Pattison and Chris Berry turned in some excellent performances taking out podium positions’ said Mr Lambert.
‘The pleasing aspect was we were consistently represented at each race in good numbers with most riders turning out personal best performances’
The final race of the series, a 45km handicap from Bundanoon to Tallong and return, was taken out by Troy Herfoss who broke away on the final climb to easily account for Toby Orchard from the Southern Highlands Club.
Andy Cartwright lead the chasing peloton only to fade in the line and finished fifth. Troy also took out the fastest time with Andy in third place.
The Goulburn riders did not fare as well in Division 2. Keith Foley-Chell and Vince Dove were the best placed Goulburn riders but were still 20 seconds off the finishing bunch. Phil Champion rode well off scratch but the head start proved too much on the fast course. Nevertheless Phil was rewarded with third fastest time.
Goulburn riders took out 7 of the top 10 places for the series with Troy Herfoss declared the overall winner. Fastest overall time went to Troy Herfoss in Division 1 and Phil Champion in Division 2. With such consistent racing across both Divisions it was not surprising the Club took out their first interclub trophy.
‘I never thought I would see the day’ said an elated President, Adam Lambert. ‘I so pleased and proud of all our riders and look forward to defending the title in 2015.’
