Headspace is a national mental health service for young people ages between 12 and 25.
Each centre employs youth workers and mental health professionals who understand the issues facing young Australians.
“The objective of Headspace is holistic health,” Hume MP Angus Taylor explained.
“Mental health is of course part of it but we also know there are links between mental health and physical health, between mental health and vocational and social support. There is a broader focus here of recognising the broader impacts on mental health including drug and alcohol use.”
Headspace Goulburn will hold multiple community roles. Not only will it provide direct services, it will also act to integrate existing services as a one-stop-shop for people in need.
“They act as a point of access so that people who are suffering have a place to go and access those services,” Mr Taylor said.
“One of the other things they focus on is early detection. We know that early detection, much of which has to happen through the schools and through workplaces, is incredibly important and we need to increase our ability to detect early because that’s exactly when the opportunity arises to address it.”
The Goulburn site will be developed according to budget allocations out of the Commonwealthassigned $14.9 million.
While the model for each Headspace remains standard across Australia, there are specifications tailored for each individual community.
It will be brought to the City in two stages over two years.
The first, to begin in the coming weeks, will be an expression of interest phase.
Interested parties should monitor the Headspace website headspace.
