The Goulburn Shooters Club is inviting you to give their sport a try this Sunday.
The doors will be open from 1pm Sunday afternoon for anyone who is interested in coming down and trying their hand at shooting a rifle on the range.
Club vice president Brian Duxbury says anyone is welcome.
“It’s great for people who might want to expose themselves to something different. It’s going to be fun and it’s not going to cost anything,” he said.
“Plus it’s quite a pleasurable thing to do that people don’t really get a chance to do anymore.
“What we aim to do is to make a very safe and relaxed environment, we show them all about gun safety and we make them shoot targets or they can shoot little metallic silhouettes for people who would rather knock something over.”
People interested will be able to try their hand at using a .22 calibre rifle, a firearm that has little recoil and makes minimal sound.
“They’re not over powering so it’s ideal for first timers and beginners to the sport,” says club member Jason Sheppard.
Sheppard says his love for the sport is more than just being as accurate as you can be. “It really clears your head,” he said.
“You need to focus your mind and relax your body. The focus is on pulling the trigger and the target, all other thoughts fade away. It’s all about getting into the moment.”
The shooting pair say the last time the club opened its door, many people tried their hand and fell in love with the sport.
But they’d like more people to share their unique sport with more.
“Really we need younger people and we need females. We need a cross section basically,” Duxbury said. “Younger people may associate gun use with negative connotations.
You see we’re used to these things because we grew up in a time where it was common to be knowledgeable in how to use a firearm.”
The shooting open day begins at 1pm this Sunday at the Goulburn Rifle Range.
