IF getting married was the cake, then $61,000 for a stint in the 2015 Hockey India League was definitely the cream for Goulburn’s Glenn Turner.

The 30-year-old happily declared “it was the best weekend of my life” after he married long term girl friend Rebecca in a private ceremony with friends and family at Lake George.
The next day he was bought for a staggering $61,000 for a stint with Dabang Mumbai in India’s Hockey League that begins next January.
The amount is $36,000 more than the $25k base price tag the Mumbai Magicians bought him for last season.
“I would have been happy to of just been selected to go for starters,” Turner said of the winning bid.
“Maybe if I got 35 or 40g it would have been a lot better than last time, but I was just really hopeful the team that was picked being good.
“And then I heard 61g… it’s huge money. For hockey and for five weeks over there I’m very, very lucky.”
Turner, who had been the 2014 Mumbai Magicians captain and was the HIL’s leading goal scorer, will join Belgian Tom Boon who topped the league’s winning bid at $103,000, the highest price ever paid for a hockey player.
“I thought the auction was going to be later but it started around 3pm in the afternoon Australia time so I was caught a bit off guard,” Turner said.
“I got a message from the goal keeper David Hart, who messaged saying do you want some good news? I said yeah I’d love some. He said ‘you went for 61.’
“I was like are you serious? I couldn’t believe it. Two hours later I was still checking Twitter because that was the only place you could get updates and I still wasn’t able to find anything.
“It still wasn’t official until the lists came out, so for the first hour after I heard I was so excited, then after a few hours of not hearing anything I thought aw no, hopefully it was true.” Turner will join his new Mumbai team mates at the start of next year.
He didn’t nominate for Australia’s Champions Trophy squad, and instead plans to enjoy married life as he re-energises himself for a possible return to national duties.
“It has to be the best weekend of my life. Obviously a couple of world cups wins would be up there but the wedding to Bec on Friday was amazing, she did so well and organised everything so all I had to do was turn up in my suit,” he laughed.
“But it was an awesome day, then on Saturday when I heard about the result it sort of topped it off.”
