Hundreds of one-of-a-kind pieces constructed by Year 7-10 Creative Metal elective students will be up for grabs at the event, set to take place at South Hill Gallery on Garroorigang Rd.

The auction acts as an annual fundraising drive for the school, with the money raised dedicated to purchasing equipment and materials for elective subjects – including the metalwork class from which the pieces are born.

In years gone by the event has raised anywhere between $6,000 and $14,000.

Creative Metal Teacher Bill Dorman said it’s all about embracing the “weird and the wonderful”. 

“There’s hundreds to choose from ranging from a two-and-a-half metre high giraffe in a boat to helicopters and a wagon – all would make great Christmas presents,” Mr Dorman said.

“Everything from the sale comes back to the school to go toward machinery and the elective classes.

“(The students) can look at something they have made and they might think it’s just a bit of rubbish but someone else can see the beauty in it and will pay good money for it.

“You never know how it’s going to turn out – the ones you think might do the best sometimes won’t go well at all and the others that took no time at all to make bring in the bids.”

While majority of the work is conducted by elective students a portion is sourced from a Mulwaree High initiative called the Thursday Sculpture Project.

“The Thursday Project is an opportunity to work with the kids that are disengaged from school for different sorts of reasons, be it family issues, social issues, attendance issues. It gives the opportunity to be creative and focus on skills,” Mr Dorman said.

Mr Dorman wished to thank local businessman Barry Burrows, Sydney company Almec for their continued support with providing materials for the kids and South Hill for hosting the event.
