JON Dow can consider himself Goulburn’s most eagle eyed archer after being crowned Bowman Club Champion on Sunday afternoon.

The 34-year-old took the Goulburn Archery Club honours after finishing on top of the leaders board at the conclusion of the two-round annual tournaments.
“This year I just came in and just shot like I normally shot and it paid off,” Dow said, who had previously finished third in the championships last year.
He says his love affair with archery began two years ago.
Once a clay shooter, he was introduced to the bow and arrow though a friend. He says he’s been hooked since.
“The biggest part for me is that you sort of lose yourself in it, you don’t have to worry about work or anything like that,” he explained.
“It’s the mind you have to relax, as soon as you start second guessing yourself or putting pressure on yourself, your game goes right out the window. It’s about staying relaxed and concentrating on yourself and no one else.” Dow came into yesterday’s 3D target round on 760 points after the regular target round a fortnight ago.
He completed the 20 target course with 780 for a final score of 1540, narrowly ahead of Jason Wales, who finished on 1508 and Mick Lewis on 1480.
Dow says he was lucky he came into the day “in the zone.”
“It’s just a nice relaxing Sunday. I couldn’t think of doing anything better to be honest,” he said.
Club secretary Darrell Giddins said the 3D round can be difficult as the targets are at an unmarked distance. It means competitors need to study the distance to be accurate.
Giddins who has been part of the club since its formation in 1979, said the club has forever been transforming to accommodate the times.
He points out most of the over 50 members use modern day bows, known as compounds. Although some members use traditional bows.
One such junior who has discovered her love for archery is 12-year-old Emma Charnock.
The youngster says she knew it was love at first bow when she tried the sport two years ago.
“I just gave it a go and I fell in love with it straight away,” Charnock said.
“My friends find it very cool and I just love to come out here all the time.”
Rodney Bell wrapped up the Bowman’s B grade with a score of 1428.
Jake Sinclair-Foley took out C grade.
Lisa Charnock took out the ladies competition on 1188 points, while junior Isaac Vidler took out the junior grade on a score of 896.
