Inspector Blair and his team were carrying out drug and alcohol testing at the Marulan Heavy Vehicle Weighing Station over a 48-hour period from 6pm on Tuesday evening until 6pm last night.
“We managed to test 200 truck drivers overnight on Tuesday, and out of those 200 we found five positive results heading northbound and five heading southbound,” Insp. Blair said.
“We also carried out 280 tests on Wednesday with two positive results- one heading northbound and one heading southbound.
“We also just recently completed Operation Shield, where thousands of truck drivers were randomly tested across the state, including here at Marulan.”
Inspector Blair stressed that both heavy and light vehicle drivers should not take drugs while driving a heavy vehicle.
“Our message is crystal clear: Don’t do drugs,” he said.
“If you do, please do not drive a motor vehicle. Goulburn has a 24 hour random drug testing operation in place that is run by the Hume Traffic and Highway Patrol. Drink and drug driving are a crime, and if you drive with either present in your system, you will be caught.” Inspector Blair pointed ou t that one driver was detected three times with illicit drugs in his system.
“I honestly can’t work people out who keep taking these drugs,” he said.
“If you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, chances of having an accident are four times greater, and its usually innocent people that are killed.
“I can say this right now, the NSW Police will not retreat one inch in the fight against drink and drug drivers.”
