Mayor Geoff Kettle, Member for Goulburn Pru Goward and Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor read out bible readings and psalms, with St Saviours Cathedral Dean, the Very Reverend Phillip Saunders also paying tribute to the victims in his address.
“The question ‘why did this happen?’ has I’m sure crossed a lot of people’s minds in recent days,” Dean Saunders said.
“There really is no answer as to why such a terrible event could happen, but gathering here today is certainly a response. It also gives us all a time to reflect.”
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said he was moved by such a great tribute to the victims Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.
“It was a beautiful service and a great tribute to the people who suffered from this unfortunate tragedy,” he said.
“It was a service characterised by peace and calm, which is so incredibly important to have at this time of the year.”
Member for Goulburn Pru Goward echoed Mr Taylor’s sentiments and said that everyone has needed some time to reflect.
“It was a lovely service and people needed time to take the scale of this tragedy in,” she said.
“As Premier Mike Baird said last week, we must not let such a tragedy weaken our resolve.”
Mayor Geoff Kettle was also visibly moved by such an occasion.
“I thank Dean Saunders for recognising that Goulburn needed an opportunity to mourn the loss of the innocent victims in this siege,” he said.
“By conducting this Ecumenical Service here today, attended by most denominations, I think it was a fitting memorial for all involved.”
