Jake Skaines, 23, lived in Towrang and still has family links in the region.
He was last seen at the minimum security facility at 3pm last Wednesday. He was reported missing to Chifley Local Area Command police who searched the area.
They believe he climbed over a fence.
Skaines is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 162cm tall, medium build and was last seen wearing prison greens.
He has tattoos on his left arm, including the word ‘Auzzie’, a star symbol and a Southern Cross.
He was serving a three-year, eight-month sentence for property theft and traffic offences and had other matters pending, Chifley Local Area Command Inspector Luke Rankin confirmed. He was sentenced in June and was due for parole in February, 2017.
Chifley police are also investigating Skaines’ possible link to a break and entry and property theft from a rural property at Porters Retreat, 19km from the Correctional facility on the Abercrombie Rd.
Two vehicles – a 1972 model Landrover, which was not registered, and a 2009 white Landcruiser (registration BJQ 83X) were stolen along with food, a sleeping bag and clothing.
Inspector Rankin said the theft was “very unusual” for that area.
“We are investigating his links with the community and we understand he has strong connections with the Goulburn area,” Inspector Rankin said.
“As a result we are liaising closely with Goulburn police.”
Police are warning the public not to approach Skaines but to instead contact Triple Zero immediately.
