He’ll no doubt give you one back. Five-year-old James Hallam is unashamedly excited to start primary school on Monday, as hundreds across the state begin Kindergarten this week and next.
James told the Post he has already made a friend during orientation at Goulburn West Public School a few months back, and is keen to make more.
He will join older brothers Ben and Darcy at the school. A few of his mates from Goulburn Preschool will also make up the 46-strong Kindy grade.
While making friends will be one of his favourite things to do this week, James is also keen for a bit of schoolyard handball during recess and lunch.
An insider source revealed he has even been practicing in the holidays.
A look around the major public and private primary schools in Goulburn student numbers are healthy for the area.
Goulburn North Public School and Wollondilly Public School have the largest class estimates of some 58 and 50 respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, Goulburn Public School will welcome 19 students and Goulburn East and South Public will say hello to 20 fresh faces.
St Peter’s and Paul’s expected 31 students to start on Thursday.
Principal of Goulburn East Charmian Cribb told the Post while Kindergarten students don’t officially start school until Monday, groups of children had been visiting the school for assessments and activities during this week.
“This week each new Kindergarten student is coming in as part of a small group to participate in Best Start assessments, literacy activities and to have another chance to get to know where everything is before they all start together on Monday,” Ms Cribb said yesterday.
“At Goulburn East we want all our students to love coming to school, to develop confidence in themselves as learners and to know how to be a good friend to others.
“During the first few weeks our Kindergarten students will spend time learning about school routines and getting to know the teachers they will be working with. Sometimes the little things like packing their school bag, unwrapping lunch or finding a jumper can be small challenges in the beginning!”
Ms Cribb said this time of the year was always a special one for teaching staff and parents.
For new parents unsure about school-life, she said all they need do is ask.
“Parents should always ask their child’s teacher if they are not sure of something. A great partnership between home and school is so important. Ask about your child’s day.
“Read the newsletters and notes to help you stay in touch with what’s happening at school. Be part of the school’s special events, join the P&C or volunteer to help in the classroom!”
