Council has produced two hundred $10 vouchers that will be sponsored by the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) this year, with 100 available from the Goulburn Visitor’s Information Centre from Thursday, February 5 and another 100 being handed out at venues during the Australian Blues Music Festival weekend.
Goulburn Mulwaree Road Safety Officer Tracey Norberg said the program aimed to encourage safer use of the roads and reducing the amount of alcohol-related offences over the festival.
“We hope the taxi vouchers will give people an option – to encourage them to prevent festivalgoer’s from drink-driving and walking,” Mrs Norberg said.
Mrs Norberg said the vouchers would be available from the Visitor Information Centre from this Thursday, February 5, as well as being handed out at venues.
“I will be out and about handing out the vouchers over the weekend as well as offering a free breathalyser service to festival goers who were considering driving or walking home,” Mrs Norberg said.
“We’re trying to get people to think of transport options before they find themselves in the city with no way to get home safely.”
“I am also trying to encourage people to look after their mates when they are out and about.”
Goulburn Radio Cabs Director Steve Canty said he was happy to be part of the plan.
“For us, as a local business, we want to work with Council to provide the community safe transport service,” Mr Canty said.
“Driving home after just a few drinks in just not sensible, so I’m hoping by us participating in the voucher program it adds to a safer festival season.”
