At his campaign launch on Friday night at the Goulburn Club, the Gundaroo-based Mr Fyfe introduced himself as an ordinary middle class bloke who was concerned that government could do things better than what was being offered by the major political parties. He told the gathering of party members and supporters that the Greens’ focus was for the betterment of the community including social justice, workers rights, human rights, sustainable economic development and the environment.
Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon was in Goulburn to help officially launch Mr Fyfe’s campaign for March 28.
She said, like all local Greens’ candidates, he offered voters a serious alternative to the Liberal/ Nationals or Labor.
She was critical of the Abbott Liberal/Nationals federal government for its attack on people’s rights and, particularly, the lower paid workers and the prevalence of casual employment.
She said there had to be a better way than privatising public assets, for quick money grabs.
“Selling off of our assets does not make economic sense,” she said. “Selling assets to private organisations not only takes away regulation but also increases costs to the consumers as companies seek to make profits.”
The Baird Government, she said, was jumping at Mr Abbott’s “evil asset recycling offer” by selling off the poles and wires and threatening to not provide other essential services if it does not go ahead.
“What will be left in public assets for the next generation and when everything that can be sold is gone, where will government get their revenue stream?” Senator Rhiannon said.
