The father and son duo of Andy and Russell Harris will make the hour long journey down from Bowral for the Valvoline Wakefield 300 this weekend.
The pair, who have been dabbling in racing for two years, says it will be their biggest motorsport challenge yet.
“We’ve never done anything on this scale and this big a distance,” 19-year-old Harris said.
“It’s just a heap of track time. Really, that’s what I like. I’m able to be out there behind the wheel for a long time.”
Father and son are one of 63 teams who are set to compete in the opening round of the Australian Endurance Championships.
Their weapon of choice for the 300km race is a 2003 model Mazda Mx5.
“To be honest it’s just a stock engine car, although we have a modified exhaust and rear suspension,” father Russell said.
“They’re fairly cheap to run, and you can get a cheap model at a good price. They never let us down although this one is lacking a bit of horse power.”
MX5s appear to be a popular choice for the 137 lap endurance event.
However it was high powered Lotus sports cars that dominated the event last year.
Racing begins with pre-racing and qualifying tomorrow before the Wakefield 300 on Sunday.
The second largest field will see racers divided into two grades, one for slower qualifiers and one for the quicker racers.
Tickets to the two day event are $20 with free entry for those under the age of 15. As for the duos’ strategy for the weekend…
“I’ll drive first and do my 30 percent and then Andy will take over and hopefully flog the remaining 70 percent,” Russell said.
“He’s definitely quicker than me. And as a father that’s what I want - I want him to do better than me.
“He’s good at steering. He’s got good natural talent and he’s a clean racer which earns him a lot of respect.
“I’ll be aiming to get to 40 laps and fingers crossed, pit and hope for the safety car.”
