This year is officially Goulburn’s 152nd birthday, and Cr Carol James and other members of the Celebrate Goulburn Group vowed at the city’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2013 that they would remember the occasion every year.

“From these beginnings, the Celebrate Goulburn Group was formed out of the birthday committee and the Heritage Parade has therefore become an annual event,” secretary of the Celebrate Goulburn Group, Laraine Whitehouse said.

“Goulburn has so much history as a city but its heritage goes much further back than just being formally declared as a city in 1863,” Secretary of the Celebrate Goulburn Group, Laraine Whitehouse said.

“Lieutenant Henry Hacking led an expedition of discovery to Goulburn in 1798, and in 1833 Goulburn was officially established on its present site.”

The celebration of the 150th birthday of Goulburn as a city in 2013 saw the first heritage parade, with over 150 entries covering over 200 decades.

“We call on the community of Goulburn and surrounds to participate in the parade this year which will be held on Sunday March 15 from 1pm,” she said.

“The parade will start from the corner of Auburn and Clinton Streets, and will travel down Auburn St turning left into Goldsmith St and then into Ellesmere St.

Registration for the parade officially starts from 11am. We need your entry forms so we can place you in the correct era of history,” Mrs Whitehouse said.

Mrs Whitehouse added that there are many schools, sporting groups, dance groups (both young and old), youth groups, community service groups, individuals and businesses that have a long history in Goulburn.

“We invite all of these people to showcase their group by way of a float, car, display on a ute, riding a horse, walking, dancing or dressing up,” she said.

“As this year is also the ANZAC Centenary, we are very excited to announce that we will have in the parade the 18 pounder gun (mentioned in Wednesday’s story) that has been restored and is the most significant artillery weapon in Australian military history.

“Any individuals who would like to dress in military uniform from that era, and who would like to march in the parade with the gun would certainly add to the commemoration of the era. Also anyone wishing to dress in any other fashion from that era would be welcome to add to the atmosphere.”

The artillery gun and items from various other vintage and heritage clubs will be on display on the St Saviours Cathedral Common throughout the day on March 15.

“After the parade, entrants and members of the community are invited to make their way to the common and enjoy a touch of yesteryear until approximately 4 pm,” Mrs Whitehouse said.
