Fire Inspector from Goulburn Fire and Rescue NSW, Bob Sayer told the Post that due to mechanical breakdown in a machine, a small fire broke out from the sparks in a filtering hopper at the facility.
“It was a bit of an operation to get this fire sorted out,” Mr Sayer said.
“There was an early risk of dust explosion, so we had to get in there slowly and check any hotspots with breathing apparatus on to ensure they were dampened down.”
Ambulance officers were also on standby in case anything went wrong.
“There were two people in the facility at the time the fire occurred, but they both managed to get out OK,” Goulburn Ambulance Station Duty Operations Manager, Inspector Martin Cutler told the Post.
The blaze also caused a power failure to more than 800 homes in the vicinity of the facility on Cathcart St.
“Essential Energy received a request from emergency services on Tuesday afternoon to de-energise part of the electricity network in the vicinity of Cathcart and Mary Sts,” Essential Energy’s Regional Manager, South Eastern Phillip Green said.
“The power supply to about 830 customers was interrupted at 4:40pm and restored at 5:15pm after Essential Energy crews from the Goulburn Depot determined it was safe to do so.”
