WHY is it that a state-of-the-art sports stadium has been proposed to be built from scratch, with all the bells and whistles attached, yet when it comes to the arts Council is only exploring some back corner of the Conservatorium?

While the Con is a great asset to the community, there needs to be some balance.
What we are lacking is a great performance space.
The Con is an old building, the Lieder Theatre is near falling apart. Both sites have too-small capacity limits to house touring shows.
Annual events like the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow have opted to use the Workers Club Auditorium to sell more tickets.
Taking a little money from the budget for yet another sports facility in town is a proposal put forward without much thought.
Spending a portion of that sum bringing existing areas up to scratch, and throwing the rest into a piggy bank for a NEW performing arts centre would be more beneficial in our eyes.
The arts are undervalued here - it’s long been said.
