They will head to the VEX Robotic World Championships on April 12 in Louisville, Kentucky, and Goulburn High School Deputy Principal Vero Joseph says fundraising for the trip is nearly done.
A total of $23,000 has been raised, with that total to be added to once the results of a raffle have been determined next week.
“If anyone is keen to participate in the raffle, they are more than welcome to come to the school to purchase a ticket,” he said.
“Prizes include a $1000 fuel voucher, a 42 inch LED television from BiRite Electrical, an oil painting donated by a teacher and a host of other prizes from local businesses across the city. The kids are really excited about heading over there, and its more about preparation and getting ready to leave now, rather than worrying too much about the fundraising aspect. One thing I can say is that the whole Goulburn community has been wonderful in their support for us.”
The students also attended a dinner hosted by the Lions Club of Goulburn last week, an organisation which has supported them right from the beginning, initially donating them $5,000.
“The guys were able to show the Lions Club members how ‘Frisky’ worked and discussed the logistics of their trip,” Mr Joseph said.
“We are actually keen to see if we can host a robotics tournament between schools right here in Goulburn. Apparently there is a tournament already going on in Victoria, but there are none in NSW at the moment. This tournament would mainly be for schools from Goulburn, Southern NSW and Canberra.”
The final event the students will be attending before they leave is a Mayoral reception on Thursday April 2, where Mayor Geoff Kettle will wish them luck and give them some mementoes of Goulburn to exchange with schools and councils in Kentucky.
