For Ken Briggs and his Goulburn team mates, life for the time being is pretty good.
They’re state champions after all. Briggs and his mates Graham Slater, David Webster and Kevin Connor, were all part of the Goulburn over 63s team (pictured) who competed at the Masters NSW State Championship hockey tournament last weekend in Bathurst.
The team won all six of their games, and beat Manning Valley 2-1 in the grand-final to be crowned over 63s champions.
Other teams to compete were Bathurst, Southern Highlands, Sydney, Newcastle and Armidale.
“We’ve been playing hockey all our lives and we enjoy the camaraderie and we enjoy playing against people we’ve been playing against for 50 odd years,” Briggs said.
“Naturally, it’s played at a slightly slower pace, but you’d be surprised how fit some of the fellas are who are playing in their team.”
It’s a fantastic achievement considering Taralga’s Connor is 76-years-old with another team member also at 75. But that doesn’t stop them.
“I’ll keep going until the body lets hold,” Briggs laughed.
“But I’ll tell you, the body doesn’t feel too good today, the back’s crook and the knee’s done!”
Goulburn’s second side, the over 55s, failed to reach finals.
However two Goulburnians made the NSW side that was picked from the tournament.
Goulburn born Steve Graham was selected into the over 65s and Connor was selected as the over 70s team manager.
