10.00pm: We're going to leave this Rolling Coverage here for the night, but we will have a summary story, video and audio uploaded sometime tonight (probably early tomorrow morning). In a nutshell, Ursula Stephens appears to have reduced a 26% margin to around a 7% margin but seems unlikely to secure enough votes to win the seat of Goulburn. Most news services have already declared Goulburn for Pru and it seems unlikely that they are wrong.
As at 10pm 29,923 of 53,960 first preference votes have been counted and the full list of votes is
- Goward 14,672 (48.95%)
- Stephens 10,039 (33.49%)
- Fyfe 2,517 (8.4%)
- Ashton 1,589 (5.3%)
- Van Der Byl 732 (2.44%)
- Fitzpatrick 424 (1.41%)
On a Two party preferred basis, 26,680 votes are counted and the split is:
- Goward 15,270 (57.23%)
- Stephens 11,410 (42.77%)
9.30pm: Sorry for the break in transmission there. We've been out recording video of the two main candidates. At this stage, Ursula Stephens has bot conceded, and Pru Goward has not claimed victory despite the figures leaning very much towards that result at this stage. Uncounted votes, particular the massive pre-poll figure (by far the largest booth in the electorate now) could still change the result but at this stage Pru Goward is comfortably ahead.
8.20pm: No recent updates in Goulburn CCounting. Antony Green of the ABC has called the election win for the Baird government.
8.05pm: There are a total of 53,960 votes in the seat of Goulburn and 21,066 (almost half) have now been counted. On first preferences, Goward is now 10,256 (49%) and Stephens 7,133 (34%). Very difficult to see where Labor's hoped for swing is going to come from with most Goulburn booths now in.
7.45pm: Several Goulburn booths are now in. Here's how they are running on first preferences: Goulburn East - Goward 206, Stephens 263. Goulburn High - Goward 784, Stephens 727. Goulburn West - Goward 492, Stephens 403. St Jseph's Primary - Goward 385, Stephens 385. It was expected that Stephens would do best in the Goulburn booths but that state of play has Goward ahead in two Goulburn booths, Stephens ahead in one and even in the other.
7.30pm: Latest figures have 10,183 first preference votes counted. Goward 4,852 (48%), Stephens 3,561 (35%).
7.25pm: Around 12 per cent of the vote counted, and the ABC computer has already made it's call in favour of Pru Goward (see photo below). It's a very early call, but having said that, there are still no signs of the size of swing Ursula Stephens requires.
7.05pm: Possible signs of a slight swing in Yass, which is notionally expected to be a National Party strionghold. Yass High first preferences have gone to Stephens (277 to 186 so far), Goward is counting ahead at Marulan (291 to 172).
7.00PM: Figures starting to roll in more quickly. No sign yet of the size of swing that Stephens needs with 1,301 first preference votes counted - Goward 1,197 (51%), Stephens 725 (31%), Fyfe 179 (8%). Those figurers include Bowning and Kangaloon and Goulburn West Public. Goulburn West is the first Goulburn booth counted and Goward led the head to head there by 492 to 403.
6.45PM: New figures in. 962 votes counted: Goward 533 (55.41%), Stephens 225 (23.39%), Fyfe 102 (10.60%). That count now also includes Collector, Mittagong Public School, Taralga and Welby with Stephens only ahead in Welby. Scott Morrison on Sky referred to Goulburn as a commuter suburb for Canberra.
6.40pm: Scott Morrison just mentioned on Sky News that pre-polle votes will be counted tonight but won't be included in the totals until tomorrow (or later) so given there were so many pre-poll votes, there will be a lot of votes still in play by the end of the night.
6.35pm: The infamous faux National Party pamphlet from Ursula Stephens just rated a mention on ABC. It's a rare experience hearing commentators talking about Goulburn at all on election night, and we've probably exceeded last election's mentions already.
6.24pm: Very first figures are in and they're from Bungonia Hall. Not enough to be meaningful yet but here are those First Preference votes. 173 votes counted - Goward 79 (45.66%), Stephens 60 (34.68%), Wal Ashton 20 (11.56%).
6.20pm: Still no actual figures to refer to but the expert commentators are split. Gladys Berejiklian reckons Pru is safe based on her 2011 winning margin of 26.8%.
6.10pm: ABC commentators feel that Goulburn is a key seat to watch.
6.00pm: Polls have now closed and Goulburn prepares for a potential nail-biter. Or not. No-one seems to know what to expect from this electorate with two strong high-profile candidates facing off. It's been an eerily quiet day at many booths around Goulburn today with estimates that more than 20% of voters in this electorate have pre-polled.
