The women's congress was held with more than 1000 women from across the world in 1915, who travelled to the Netherlands during World War I to talk to world leaders about other ways of resolving international differences, instead of resorting to trench warfare.

Queanbeyan Quilters member Boni Maywald said the women were concerned about the loss of life during the war, and the huge impact it was having on the home front as well as the war front.

"We're sending something from Australia, sending them the story of the women involved in Australia 100 years ago and today," she said.

Ms Maywald said the quilt represented something permanent, like the enduring efforts of women across the world who stood for peace and not war.

"Instead of doing something temporary and frivolous, this is something handmade in the digital era," she said.

"Instead of sending bombs, we'd rather send blankets."

Before the quilt journeys to Europe, it will be on display as part of the Queanbeyan Heritage Festival at the pop-up PeaceKnits event.

It will held in the garden of the Boab Book Cottage, 36 Crawford Street, on April 11 from 10am to 4pm.

Ms Maywald organised the event with a host of other volunteers to showcase the work of the quilters in Queanbeyan and across NSW.

She said the Queanbeyan Quilters have been preparing for the festival for the past two years.

The group plans to present 42 major works as well as plenty of  smaller works.

Ms Maywald said she was especially proud of the large free-form crochet black-out curtain created with the help of Kiama Quilters.

"We did a one-day workshop with the Kiama Quilters and showed them how to do free-form," she said. "Free-form is no pattern, it's like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute."

The black-out curtain is in keeping with the PeaceKnits theme, as a representation of the curtains used to stop light from houses attracting bombing planes.

The quilters have also made a variety of bandages, socks and washcloths to be sent overseas for leprosy sufferers.
