Goulburn MP Pru Goward last week announced an $150,000 dollar for dollar donation would be issued to the Cathedral from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) towards their heritage restoration project; the total cost of which is estimated at some $467,300.
The restoration processes will include addressing serious roof leaks, rising damp problems, subsequent damage to the walls and features of the building.
Damage to stone work and roof tiling also needs repair.
Cathedral Dean, the Very Reverend Phillip Saunders and Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn Bishop Stuart Robinson expressed delight at the announcement.
“This grant is wonderful news for the fabric of the Cathedral,” Dean Saunders said.
“Part of the success of the grant was in large part because of the hard work of the Heritage Committee and Michael Fox, our Heritage Architect, in producing a Conservation Management Plan. This grant will assist in future proofing the Cathedral in terms of rising damp and water damage from the roof, and will be a significant first step in the management of one of the great heritage buildings of Goulburn. Later stages will work towards Blacket’s original vision.”
A total of $316,000 was donated to both the cathedral and to the St Clair archival facility.
“I am delighted the Baird government is delivering substantial funding and support to protect our heritage treasures both in our local community and across NSW,” she said.
“Our history and heritage are core elements of our local community, and it is vital we protect and conserve our heritage in honour of our forebears and for the benefit of generations to come. Previously grants were only available to state heritage listed properties, but we realise that local heritage needs support too.”
St Clair will receive $97,000 for their conservation work plus another $10,000 towards their Conservation Management Plan 2015.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council will receive $8,500 to continue its heritage advisory position and $10,000 for the Goulburn Mulwaree Local Heritage Places Implementation Grant, to continue attracting grants for the LGA.
Finally, Riversdale will receive $10,000 towards an Interpretation Plan.
Upper Lachlan Shire Council will also benefit from the funding, receiving $9,000 towards their heritage advisor program.
